Five Things I Learned Co-Writing Prequels to Ender'due south Game
If y'all were to ask me to listing my five favorite novels of all time, I'd probably give a slightly dissimilar answer every year. I'm always discovering something new and glorious that blows my listen and leaves me in a giddy country of wonder. But one book that will never leave that list is Ender'due south Game. In fact, it'due south currently perched there at the number one spot, and I doubt anything will ever unseat it.
I'grand not alone in this. For millions of readers, reading Ender's Game was a transformative feel. It taught us that characters in a book don't have to feel similar characters in a book. They can feel like real, genuine friends.
That was my experience, anyway. Ender and Valentine and Bean and Dink. Information technology's similar I knew these kids and felt a connection to them. Our hearts were knit together, as the saying goes.
Then when Orson Scott Card invited me to join him in writing prequel novels to Ender's Game, I was a little gun shy. I worried that fans would be expecting another Ender's Game and that if our novels didn't transform them and wow them as much as the original, they'd cockle their noses and hate me for life.
Remember when George Lucas announced that he was going to make The Phantom Menace? I went fanboy bonkers. Another Star Wars motion picture? Glory hallelujah! I couldn't believe it. I'yard going to sit in a theater again and have an experience only like I had watching the originals.
And then the movie came out and it was, um, less than what I had hoped.
Is this the expletive of all prequels, I wondered.
Scott Card put my mind at ease reminding me that we weren't writing Ender's Game. That isn't the goal. This is something dissimilar.
And then I dived in, and learned quite a chip along the way . . . (more…)
Earth AWAKENS – the latest Ender book is out
Today we release EARTH AWAKENS (U.k. | ANZ) the 3rd novel in the stunning First Formic Wars serial. Co-written by Orson Scott Bill of fare and Aaron Johnston, it tells what happened in the run up to the events in the bestselling classic novel ENDER'S GAME.
I dear this series – it's just so readable. And non just for all those people who are already big fans of the Ender books. Information technology likewise works equally a fast-paced science fiction risk in itself. The story simply whizzes by and the action doesn't let up at any indicate. It's fascinating to run across how humanity's strategies develop in our kickoff hostile encounter with an alien race.
This latest book has already been receiving some very high praise, with Publishers Weekly claiming:
'This breakneck thriller is a dark and lively addition to the Enderverse'

Cory Doctorow on his story "When Sysadmins Ruled the World"from WASTELANDS
The most important thing virtually a organisation is how it fails, though mostly nosotros pay attention to how information technology works. Who cares how many houses yous could buy on cheap credit if they all stop up equally subprime roadkill when the whole crooked business unravels?
We tell ourselves that culture fails badly. Stories I love, from Day of the Triffids to 1984, paint a flick of a world where disaster is attended past riots, rape and cruelty. The reality – shown time and over again – is that disaster is attended by kindness, intendance, and compassion. When the lights go out, we don't eat each other, we help each other.
'Elite panic' is the sociological phenomenon that causes the masters of the universe to send guns into Republic of haiti after the quake – ahead of the humanitarian aid. It'south why the City of London is blanketed in CCTVs. Information technology's why police all over the world are so pants-wettingly terrified of public protest and treat every march similar a anarchism in potentia.
Nosotros need to tell ourselves stories about the goodness of our neighbours as remedy for the vile slander that our stories have told u.s. well-nigh the human race. It is the only way to counter elite panic. (more…)
On co-authoring a novel ready in the world of ENDER'S GAME . . .
Today sees the release of Globe UNAWARE ( UK | ANZ ) and EARTH Afire ( Great britain | ANZ ), books 1 and ii of The First Formic War, prepare 100 years before ENDER'S GAME.
Orson Scott Card co-authored these novels with Aaron Johnston – a bestselling author and acquaintance producer on the upcoming Ender's Game movie . To celebrate the release, we asked Aaron what information technology'southward similar to write within such a well-known and much loved world . . .
When Orson Scott Bill of fare asked me to coauthor the prequel novels to his science-fiction archetype Ender'south Game, my first two thoughts were: (1) Wow, what an incredible accolade, and (ii) You better not screw this up, Johnston, or fans will hunt you down and toilet paper your house.
We fans tin exist a prickly lot. Especially when it comes to stories that hold special significance to the states, every bit Ender's Game does to millions of readers. I've read Ender's Game more times than whatsoever other piece of work of fiction, and whenever anyone asks me for a book recommendation, the kickoff words out of my rima oris are always, "Have yous read Ender's Game?"
For me, Ender'south Game was the first book I ever read wherein the characters didn't experience like characters at all but rather like friends and kindred spirits. Bean, Dink, Shen, Valentine, Ender. They were all so believable and honest and distinct that when I stepped into their world, my own world melted away.
I don't presume to suggest that our books volition have the same effect on readers as Ender'south Game does. Only Ender'due south Game can produce the feel information technology provides. Only I do hope that our novels will feel like they vest in the Ender universe. That was my goal from the beginning. "If we do this," I told Scott, "I desire it to feel like an Orson Scott Carte du jour novel." And past that I mean: when fans read the volume, I didn't want them to distinguish between the parts I had written from the parts Scott had written. I wanted it to feel seamless.
That'south a lofty goal, I know. Just OSC can write like OSC, after all. But I felt every bit if we owed it to fans to provide a new and heady adventure story that also felt similar a member of the Ender universe.
In fact, it was so of import to me that the books sounded and felt like other OSC novels that earlier I started writing each twenty-four hours, I would commonly selection up an OSC book and read a chapter or 2 just to get my mind in a place that spoke in the vocalization and rhythm of Orson Scott Menu. Scott has a gift for writing in 3rd-person, limited signal-of-view that allows for deep characterization without abandoning the pace. I'm not conceited enough to suggest that I do it besides as he does, but I certainly tried. The biggest compliment I have received thus far is when one fan called the series "archetype Orson Scott Carte."
But of class this is a collaboration. And since Orson Scott Card rarely collaborates with other authors, fans naturally have a lot of questions. What follows are my answers to the questions I well-nigh often hear. (more…)
How did they motion picture the nothing G fight scenes for the ENDER'Due south GAME flick?
One of the coolest things in Orson Scott Bill of fare'southward novel ENDER'S GAME – and likely one of the most difficult things to flick – are the combat scenes that have place in the zero gravity battle room. So just how did they go about filming them for the Ender's Game movie?
There'due south a slap-up exclusive interview here on i09 from Asa Butterfield (star of Hugo and The Boy In the Striped Pajamas), who plays Ender Wiggin himself.
It's a very cool insight into the challenges of filming a scifi movie, due east.g.:
"When you lot're in the harnesses to end yourself from falling at the waist, which is where they're connected, you have to be tensed up. So keeping deportment smooth whilst having your whole trunk completely tensed is surprisingly hard. Meanwhile you're saying your lines . . ."
You don't get those problems filming a rom-com!
If you're based in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and want to proceed upward with all the Ender's Game motion picture news, there is now both an Ender'due south Game U.k. Facebook page and Ender'due south Game UK Twitter account (@EndersGameFilm) that y'all can follow, along with the Ender'southward Game Official Tumblr.
And if you lot're smashing to discover out more back story to ENDER'S GAME, and the conflict that spawned the battle school, nosotros'll shortly be publishing two explosive Orson Scott Card books telling of mankind's kickoff contact with the alien race – EARTH UNAWARE (Britain | ANZ) and World Ablaze (UK | ANZ), books ane and two in The Kickoff Formic Wars.
